Experience

In 2005, I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from the University of South Florida. My goal was to become a journalist and I took a job as a technical director for USF’s College of College of Engineering. This was my first introduction to the land of distance learning. We used a telephone routing system to allow people at several different locations dial in and we live streamed the lectures to various locations. From there I moved to work in sports broadcasting as a master control operator and then I was promoted to leased access coordinator. My responsibilities included coordinating daily programming, intercepting feeds from locations and ingesting materials for air. Those skills easily transferred into news production. I worked as an audio operator and production assistant. Throughout my time working in broadcast, I wanted to be a freelance journalist so I changed careers and pursued jobs as a TV Production teacher. Since I became a teacher, I’ve been able to start my own production company and employ former students as freelances in event coverage and production.

Teacher, freelance filmmaker, instructional designer

Throughout my development as a teacher, I have been able to explore more deeply the television and media landscape as it applied to instructional design. I’ve created a project-based course that gives students hands on experience in producing videos as well as a thorough understanding of the skills needed to work with a group. Unlike many other courses, there was no official template on how this course should be taught. While designing my own unique curriculum for this course, I was introduced to a myriad of resources as well as technology that helped engage students and build solid skills.
